Cala Carbó – Cala d’Hort – Ses Païsses de Cala d’Hort
A beautiful route on which we will get to know two of the most beautiful beaches on the island, we will have views of the islet of Es Vedrà for much of the way and we will learn a little more about the history of Ibiza. A route with fantastic views of the sea and pleasant walks in the heart of nature where you can take shelter from the sun under large pine trees. This route is relatively easy, only 5.80 km in total, of which 100 metres are steep. It does not require much effort, but we recommend that you wear sports shoes, sun cream and, of course, water.
Difficulty: Medium - High
Distance: 6km
Estimated time: 2 hours (there and back).
Recommendations: Wear sports footwear and clothing, sunscreen and plenty of water.
We will visit Cala d'Hort and Cala Carbó, two emblematic beaches on the west coast of Sant Josep, as well as the Punic-Roman settlement of Ses Païsses de Cala d'Hort, which has remains of houses and a necropolis from the mid 5th century BC. Shall we start?
Our route will begin at the entrance to Cala Carbó beach. Between the car park and the beach itself we have the mountain on one side and one of the beach restaurants on the other side. Just in front of the restaurant we will find a path up the mountain. This is where our route starts. We will climb this path through pine trees and nature, always leaving the coast on our right. We can get close to the cliffs to get impressive views of Es Vedrà or a beautiful panoramic view of Cala Carbó.
After walking for about 10 minutes you will come across a very curious seaside spot: Cala Truja. A small cove barely 12 metres long with a boathouse. Access is relatively difficult, but on some occasions you can see bathers who have reached this cove by kayak or boat. It is well worth a look from the top of the cliff. We continue our route. Now we recommend shortening it by following a straight line, as shown on the map, but you can also continue along the cliff to enjoy the views of Es Vedrà and Es Vedranell.
We are now approaching Cala d'Hort. Here we have the option of going down the stairs next to the restaurant to the beach and the beach to cool off a little or simply enjoy the views. If the hours coincide with lunchtime, it would be a very good experience to enjoy a good paella with views and a few dips before continuing with the route. We continue towards Ses Païsses de Cala d'Hort along the path indicated on the map. Although it is not very busy, special attention must be paid to cars. Follow this route for approximately 1.5 km until you reach a crossroads where you go down the road for about 50 metres to take the turning on the opposite side of the road. Here you will see a sign indicating Ses païsses de Cala d'Hort. Be careful when crossing the road.
This monumental complex corresponds to the ruins of a rural settlement from the Punic and Roman periods that was founded in the mid-5th century BC and continued to survive in the high and low Roman Empire until the beginning of the 8th century AD. It consists of a large building used as a dwelling (and for the development of various agricultural industries) which is in an acceptable state of conservation; another very deteriorated one, and two necropolises, one from the Punic period and the other Byzantine. The Punic necropolis consisted of 20 tombs of the hypogeum type (underground rooms cut into the rock with a shaft for access), some of which contained up to two stoneware sarcophagi and numerous pieces of Punicoebusitan and imported pottery, razor blades, glass paste vessels, scarabeus, etc. From the upper part of the complex you can see two Byzantine-period moats overlooked by a spectacular landscape with the islet of Vedrà in front of you. This settlement was excavated between 1917 and 1982-1985. If you go down a few metres you will find an extension of the Museum of Ethnography of Ibiza: Can Sorà. It is usually closed if no excursion is planned.
It is time to go back. You can go back the same way we came, passing through Cala d'Hort, but there is another more direct option to Cala Carbó. After leaving Ses Païsses de Cala d'Hort we continue along the Cala d'hort road in the opposite direction to the beach until we reach the crossroads of the Cala Carbó road, which we follow for about 2 km to reach the beautiful Cala Carbó again. If you have done the route and return to Cala Carbó around midday, you can book a table in one of its restaurants and enjoy a good lobster stew, a tasty baked fish or a rice dish to recover your strength.
